NFPA Codes - Must-Remember Points for Engineers

1. NFPA 13 (Sprinkler Systems)

• Design Density: Minimum 0.1 gpm/ft² (4.1 mm/min) (light hazard) up to 0.3+ gpm/ft² (12.2 mm/min) (extra hazard).
• Coverage Area: Max 130 ft² (12 m²) per sprinkler (light hazard).
• Hydraulic Calculations: Required for all systems except small, pre-calculated ones.
• ESFR Sprinklers: Must have minimum 12 ft (3.7 m) ceiling clearance.

2. NFPA 14 (Standpipes)

• Class I: 2.5" (65 mm) outlets (fire department use).
• Class II: 1.5" (38 mm) hose stations (occupant use).
• Pressure Limits: Max 175 psi (12 bar) at hose outlet.
• High-Rise Rule: Standpipes required in buildings > 30 ft (9 m) tall.

3. NFPA 25 (Inspection & Testing)

• Weekly: Check control valves (must be open!).
• Quarterly: Inspect alarm devices.
• Annually: Full flow test for main drains.
• 5 Years: Internal inspection of piping.

4. NFPA 70 (NEC - Electrical)

• Fire Pump Power: Must be on dedicated circuit (NEC 695).
• Emergency Lighting: 90 mins backup power required.
• Arc Flash: Hazard labels required on panels > 120V.

5. NFPA 72 (Fire Alarms)

• Audibility: 15 dB above ambient noise.
• Smoke Detector Spacing: Max 30 ft (9 m) apart (unless engineered).
• Manual Pull Stations: Max 5 ft (1.5 m) height, 200 ft (61 m) travel distance.

6. NFPA 101 (Life Safety)

• Exit Width: 0.2 inches (5 mm) per person (calculated).
• Travel Distance: Max 200 ft (61 m) (unsprinklered business occupancies).
• Door Swing: Must swing in egress direction if > 50 occupants.
